Waffle Mittens - Kids & Adults

When I was setting out to make some mittens to match my go-to market item, I realized that I couldn’t find a good pair of waffle stitch mittens that were for both adults and kids. I knew what I had to do! So here are my mittens that use a fun waffle stitch. There is a kids version and an adult version. Enjoy!

What you need:

  • I Hook (5.5mm) or J hook (6.0mm)

  • 150-200 yards of worsted weight yarn.

  • Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

  • Scissors

Stitches to know:

  • sc - single crochet

  • dc - double crochet

  • hdc - half double crochet

  • fpdc - front post double crochet

  • bpdc - back post double crochet

  • ch - chain

  • sl st - slip stitch

  • Magic circle

Tips:

  • When starting a new row with a fpdc, work the stitch around both the first stitch and the chain. This will make the seam less visible.

  • You can adjust the size by adding rows 4 and 5 to before and after the thumbhole rounds. Make sure you end on row 5 before moving to the next row in the pattern if you do this.

  • You can extend the thumb by adding more rows of sc before the decreases.

  • There will be some gaps when wearing the mittens so if you wish to line them with fabric or felt, you can. I suggest using #8 or #10 crochet thread for sewing into the finished item. This will allow you to find a color that matches and is a bit stronger than sewing thread.

  • If you want a tighter cuff, you can go down a hook size from what you are using. For example, if you are using a 5.5mm hook, you can go down to a 5.0mm hook to make it more snug.

  • There is no gauge for these mittens because you can adapt the size to fit your needs.
